SEOUL, March 25 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean Cabinet minister called on China Thursday to treat North Korean escapees more humanly and not to repatriate them to their home country where they are certain to face severe punishment.Unification Minister Jeong Se-hyun was commenting on reports that seven North Koreans are staging a hunger strike at a detention center at the Chinese border town of Tumen, demanding that they not be sent back to their communist homeland.
The South Korean pointman on North Korea said his government was checking with the Chinese government on the truth of the reports.
