The old guard around Assad last week were quick to accuse the US of having been behind the unrest that was set off by Kurdish demonstrators in Syria demanding minority rights. The violence spread across the north-east of the country, with Kurdish leaders saying more than 30 people were killed and scores wounded over four days as the riot police put down the rare protests with gunfire.
