WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture is expected to announce--perhaps as early as this week--a drastic increase in the number of animals it will test for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
In a separate but related issue, the Food & Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) will also step up testing of imported feed this year, Dr. Stephen Sundlof, director of CVM, said during an appropriations hearing last week. Both actions are aimed at enhancing the nation's protections against BSE.
An announcement from USDA is pending on its accelerated testing program, which will target animals at the highest risk.
