With recent announcements by Verizon, AT&T, BellSouth and SBC of Ethernet services spanning the continent, the old designation of metro Ethernet is fading rapidly. The nation's largest carriers may still be some ways off from achieving the flat packet networks envisioned at the beginning of the decade, but make no mistake--legacy circuit data technologies are facing a powerful adversary.
