BOSTON -- The clearest message to come out of the historic vote here on gay marriage is, perhaps, the almost complete lack of clarity with which lawmakers and the broader public now confront one of the most contentious issues in American life.
After three constitutional conventions in which state lawmakers have grappled with the legality of gay marriage, the debate here in Massachusetts has become a sort of litmus test for the entire nation.
