THE "Made in Japan" label has long been familiar to people living in East and Southeast Asia, but in the last five years or so Japan's influence on consumer behavior in the region has expanded beyond automobiles and electronic goods into the cultural realm. Today magazines and manga, music, movies, clothes, cosmetics, food--most anything manufactured, produced or designed in Japan is greedily consumed by young East and Southeast Asians. To judge by the popularity in the region of T-shirts bearing meaningless Japanese phrases, even the Japanese language has acquired a certain cachet.
