THE Chubu economic region, centered on the city of Nagoya with its two million people, is one of the big three metropolitan regions in Japan, along with the Tokyo and Kinki (or Osaka) metropolitan regions. However, Chubu is called a "10 percent economic region," since the basic indices of the area, such as population and gross regional product, have generally been about 10 percent of those for the whole nation.
