ST GEORGE'S Day was reduced to nothing more than a charity evening by one stroke of a magistrate's pen yesterday.
The court, which was hearing a publican' s request for one hour of extra drinking on April 23, was told that England's patron saint's day was not a 'special occasion'.
So magistrate Roy Church crossed out the words 'St George's Day' on the application and replaced them with 'a charitable function' - meaning the pub can stay open, but will have to give money raised to charity.
The case left publican Tony Bennett stunned, not least because many pubs across Britain have already been granted St George's Day ...
