But the seemingly unquestionable fact keeps South Korea deeply divided as it tries to reconcile with its communist neighbor.Since fighting a fratricidal war more than a half century ago, the two Koreas had never been on speaking terms until their leaders met for the first time in 2000, spurring a flurry of reconciliation projects, including reunions of separated families.
The efforts, however, brought to the fore one inevitable question: whether to regard the North as South Korea's compatriot or adversary.
