Developers of The Riviera, an apartment complex for senior citizens, will be able to capitalize on the aging population of Des Plaines and surrounding suburbs while earning the distinction of having the tallest building in town.

Nick Mitchell, owner of Grazie Ristorante in Des Plaines, won the endorsement of a majority of city council members Monday to construct the 14-story, 134-foot-tall building next to his Oakton Street restaurant.

Those five city council members voting in favor of the project, which included Mayor Tony Arredia, said they hoped it spurred development along Oakton Street.
