Q My mother has had a horrific life. I want to be there for her, but her myriad issues really stress me out. I've tried to tell her she should get help from someone more qualified, but she still feels the need to lean on me. Am I being selfish? Should I put my feelings aside and simply find a way to cope? She is such a loving and sensitive person, and I fear hurting her more. She has suffered abandonment, various forms of abuse (not by my father), extreme self-doubt, depression, my older brother's suicide, and more. Any one of these would be enough to break someone down. I finally convinced her to see a doctor, but she canceled the appointment because she felt "okay." ...
