MOST British election campaigns are blessedly brief The campaign for the 1992 election is proving a depressing exception. it has already been going for six months, and it may be another eight before the politicians shut up and the voters have their say. The only thing this campaign has in common with most of its predecessors is the abysmal quality of political debate. The air is already thick with hyperbole, abuse and lies.
It should not be like this, and need not be. The immediate question facing politicians is, after all, a momentous one: how far is Britain willing to compromise its remaining political independence to buy the fruits of greater European union? ...
