BACOLOD CITY The Lakas-KAMPI, the coalition partner of the larger National Peoples Coalition (NPC) in Negros, is trying to regroup after the NPC abandoned President Arroyo and the party and switched support to Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (KNP) standard bearer Fernando Poe Jr.
NPC provincial chairman Gov. Joseph Maranon, who led the mass defection to the KNP, is a close ally of former ambassador and San Miguel Corp. (SMC) chairman Eduardo Danding Cojuangco.
The action of the NPC here was the culmination of complaints aired by mayors and other officials against the Lakas, which is headed by President Arroyo.
