NEW YORK -- Personal care appliances were one of the fastest-growing segments of the housewares business between 1998 and 2002, and a number of trends, ranging from the desire for convenience to heightened health concerns and from an aging population to simple self-indulgence, promise to fuel continued growth.

According to the International Housewares Association's "2003 State-of-the-Industry Report" consumers spent $981.9 million on such items in 2002. The segment recorded an impressive 22.6% compound annual growth rate over the five-year span.
