`What's wrong with your azaleas?" Cara Randolph's friends asked when the pink buds flowered in front of her Deltaville, Va., home late last fall. She wondered the same thing. Azaleas are supposed to bloom in spring. Maybe the eight bushes had been fooled by Indian summer.
But when she asked her landscaper, he explained that the shrubs were a new variety, a patented hybrid sold under the brand name Encore Azalea and bred to bloom twice a year. Indeed, the bushes began budding again a few weeks ago. "It's just wonderful!" says Randolph.
