As surely as daffodils herald spring, political lawn signs signal the approach of an election. The theft or vandalism of lawn signs is a routine part of the cycle, though seldom on such a scale as occurred when someone stole 200 signs supporting Eugene City Council candidate Betty Taylor. The crime underlines the importance of this prosaic, personal and low-tech form of campaigning.
The thief evidently tried to remove every one of Taylor's green-and-white signs, a far more systematic effort than the usual knockdown or grab-and-run. It's natural to presume that the perpetrator was hostile to Taylor and her views.
