Two summers ago, when the bad news about hormone replacement therapy from the Women's Health Trial hit the headlines, I went off HRT cold turkey after 17 years of being on it. My body went into a type of withdrawal shock. The hot flashes returned with a vengeance, arthritis set into my joints, my bone density dropped rapidly and I felt as if I'd aged dramatically over a short period of time. Thankfully, over the last year and a half, the symptoms have decreased dramatically, but the suffering could have been avoided if I had only been warned to go off gradually.
