Washington Post columnist Colbert I. King recently won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize Award for commentary in the journalism category.

Pulitzer board judges referred to King's work as "against-the-grain columns that speak to people in power with ferocity and wisdom."

King, a native of Washington, D.C., and a graduate of Howard University, tells JET that he "was delighted, surprised and filled with a whole range of emotions" when he heard that he had won the award. He also admits that he was unprepared for the honor.

"I was a finalist in 2000 as well," he says. "I just didn't know. I was prepared for any kind of result."
