The idea of the "six-million-dollar man" may not be fiction much longer. An expanding incidence of heart, orthopedic and visual disorders attributable to aging has led to the development of implantable devices to treat an ever-widening range of conditions.

Demand for implantable medical devices will increase nearly 11% annually to exceed $24 billion in 2007, according to a recent survey by The Freedonia Group, Cincinnati.

Cardiology will see the largest increase. The strongest gains in demand are anticipated for cardiac resynchronization devices, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) and drug-eluting stents.
