When Gae Veit set up commercial construction company Shingobee Builders Inc. in 1980, she had the smarts and the experience. But she did not have a track record that would win big-money contracts.

Thanks to the U.S. Small Business Administration's 8(a) Business Development program, Veit is playing in the big leagues today. "It made a big difference, because it allowed us to do larger-sized projects, which gave us the credibility we needed to market the company in the commercial marketplace," says Veit, 2003 SBA Entrepreneurial Success Award winner for the Midwest Region.
