Apr. 8--Los Angeles city officials gave Sunshine Canyon Landfill operators approval Wednesday to rip out as many as 940 mature oak trees, marking the last environmental clearance needed before the groundbreaking for a new 55 million-ton dump.
Tree clearing will start immediately, Browning Ferris Industries officials said. Crews will have to stay 300 to 500 feet away from nesting birds.
Neighbors and environmentalists decried the decision, saying the project would wipe out 194 acres of dense oak woodlands in the canyon north of Granada Hills. Plans to replant ...
