The recent crisis in the Gulf region demonstrated that we cannot take the security of our crude oil supplies for granted. Against a background of growing stability amongst the super-powers, the Middle East erupted.
In addition to the humanitarian aspect, there can be little doubt that the dependence of the industrialised nations on Middle Eastern crude oil contributed to the allied determination to liberate Kuwait and restore peace in the region. The role played by the United Nations in reaching fast and virtually unanimous decisions throughout the conflict should be regarded as both positive and promising for world peace.
