Ciba-Geigy's (Basel) generics firm, Geneva Pharmaceuticals (Broomfield, CO), has received Food & Drug Administration (Washington) approval to make and sell atenolol, its generic version of ICI's antihypertensive drug Tenormin, in the U.S. ICI's U.S. patent covering treatment of angina with Tenormin expired last week. ICI's patent for use against hypertension, which covers the bulk of sales, continues until 1993.

ICI's sales of the beta-blocker amounted to 650 million pounds ($1.1 billion) in 1990, almost half generated in the U.S. The angina market accounts for 15% of U.S. Tenormin sales. Observers foresee a $170-million/year dent in ICI Pharmaceuticals' sales ...
