It is no surprise that when the Vancouver Symphony makes a rare appearance in the Puget Sound area - Sunday afternoon at the Pantages Theater - that it will be under the auspices of the Tacoma Philharmonic.
Founded in 1933, the Tacoma Philharmonic was originally an orchestra conducted by Eugene Linden from Portland. It lasted for 18 years until it became what it is today - a presenter of concerts. The orchestra's demise resulted from a short-lived merger, in 1947, of orchestras in Tacoma, Seattle and Olympia, named the Pacific Northwest Orchestra, and a shift of activity from Tacoma to Seattle.
