Urban sprawl is the rapid spread of urban development and urban populations into non-urban areas. Growth is usually thought of as a good thing for cities, but unplanned, unregulated growth with characterized sprawl can become a major problem. Alabama's four largest metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) are experiencing the effects of urban sprawl. Those MSAs include 1) Birmingham, 2) Huntsville, 3) Mobile, and 4) Montgomery.
