My first visit to Fort Lauderdale was in 1970. It was the first of many trips as a high-schooler and later as a college student. Every year on spring break, my buddies and I would flock to the beaches of Fort Lauderdale--a rite of spring made famous in feature films such as Where the Boys Are, starring Connie Francis, and Girl Happy, starring Elvis Presley.

Like most of my buddies, I stopped going to Fort Lauderdale for spring break in the early '80s, when the city elected to shed its party town image and pulled the red carpet out from under the young revelers.
