Instances of infanticide have been reported for a number of different animal species (Stacey and Edwards 1983, Hausfater and Hrdy 1984, Hiraiwa-Hasegawa 1988). In many of these cases, infanticide was explained as a product of sexual selection in that it creates reproductive opportunities that otherwise would be lacking. One common scenario is that by killing unrelated young, the infanticidal male causes his breeding partner to produce new offspring that he fathers.
