Apr. 16--LOWVILLE, N.Y. -- The Kraft Foods cream cheese plant here is not on the chopping block, according to U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer.
"I walk away relieved," Mr. Schumer, D-N.Y., said after an hourlong tour of the 7388 Utica Blvd. mill, the largest cream cheese manufacturing plant in the country.
After Kraft announced in January that it will close its cheddar cheese plant in Canton as part of a restructuring plan, Mr. Schumer said, he checked with officials from the Northfield, Ill., company on the status of the Lowville plant.
