Soft sales heighten competition in hair care market

CDR Roundup--Chain drug executives agree that, while last year was a growth year in dollar sales for hair care products, sales for the first half of 1991 can at best be called flat. According to Nielsen Marketing Research, hair care sales at drug chains declined by 0.5% for the first six months of 1991. This follows 5% growth in 1990, a year in which the overall category showed a sales increase of 2%. Hair care sales are down 2% across all trade classes so far this year, with only discounters showing an improvement--up 4%.
