Dakar, in Senegal, is the first major port-of-call from Europe and is well placed for trans-shipping goods to landlocked west African nations. Additional advantages lie in its deep-draft structure and a wide access channel which allows round-the-clock access to the port.

Senegal inherited a relatively modern maritime infrastructure from the French colonial period. Dakar's current infrastructure includes a tanker terminal, a container terminal with 424 metres of berth and an eight-hectare yard area.
