You had to learn the human body and what you were expected to do as a corpsman. The motto was to keep as many men at as many guns as long as possible.
In San Francisco, I was to report at a certain pier and to the USS Wharton, which is a transport ship. We ended up in Noumea, New Caledonia.
During the process of sailing over, I got sicker than a dog. I thought, "Boy, this Navy is not for me. I can't handle it." But after a day or so, I came around and I got my sea legs and everything was OK.
