The hearing of Pavel Telicka, Czech Commissioner-elect, took place on April 14 at the European Parliament. Like his nine colleagues from the other new Member States, Mr Telicka will work for the first six months after taking office alongside an existing Commissioner before receiving a portfolio of his own in the next Commission, which begins its term of office in November. He will carry out this "apprenticeship" (to use his own words) with David Byrne, the current Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection.
