Britain's two biggest mortgage lenders have called for a rise in the stamp duty threshold.
Both the Nationwide and Halifax have asked Gordon Brown to reconsider the level at which stamp duty applies.
Martin Ellis, chief economist of Halifax, said a large proportion of first-time buyers were now affected by the tax.
He said: "First-time buyers in all regions across the UK are having to pay it. Because the threshold has been left alone, more and more people are being sucked into it and that's hitting first-time buyers."
