Ernst Van Dyk had been knocking on the door of a new record for the men's wheelchair race at the Boston Marathon.
Yesterday, he kicked the door down.
The 31-year-old native of Stellenbosch, South Africa, established a new course record by storming through the field in a blistering time of 1 hour, 18 minutes, 27 seconds, breaking the previous record of Heinz Frei (1:21:23 in 1994) by nearly three minutes. The win was also Van Dyk's fourth straight, matching Franz Nietlispach's magical run from 1997-2000.
