Friday, April 9, the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals stayed a ruling that will let cable companies be regulated the way phone companies are regulated at the federal, state and local level. The stay was granted pending an appeal to the Supreme Court by the Federal Communications Commission and the cable companies.

In March 2002, the FCC decided that broadband access delivered over cable TV lines was an information service, not a telecommunications service. Last October, an appeals court decided that the FCC was wrong. Its decision demands that the cable companies let third-party ISPs piggyback on their infrastructure.
