Tom Harrell says jazz caused him to better understand the presence and influence of God.

"I realized the music came from someplace outside myself," says the trumpeter and composer.

"Whenever I sit down to write music, I just let it happen. I try to be open to a creative flow, be true to my feelings," says Harrell.

As a composer, Harrell believes what you don't say can be the most compelling and poetic. "The beautiful melody is sometimes enhanced by leaving notes out," says the three-time Downbeat trumpeter of the year.
