NEW YORK -- Josephine Chaus, chairwoman of Bernard Chaus, Inc., pledged Thursday to return the firm to greater profitability and said she expects sales to return to the $300 million level "in the next few years."

Chaus made her remarks as she presided over a shareholders' meeting for the first time. Chaus rose to the top spot in the company following the death in May of her husband Bernard Chaus, who was chairman.

The women's moderate-price apparel firm posted sales of $232,444,000 in the fiscal year ended June 30, with a loss of $12,004,000. The last time sales topped $300 million was 1987, when they hit $333,881,000.
