For five days, Jack's sore throat had been getting worse. Finally, Jack's mother made an appointment for him to see the family physician, who took a throat culture with a cotton swab. The doctor's diagnosis: strep throat. Jack was given a written prescription that the doctor explained to him after he wrote it. The prescription read: "Penicillin VK tablets, 250 milligrams, take one tablet with water every six hours, on an empty stomach." Jack picked up the medicine with his mother. Over the next 10 days, he followed the directions. By the time the tablets were finished, he was completely well again.
