The young sprinter from Jamaica sat huddled against the wind and rain in the west grandstand at Hayward Field. It was April 1981, and the Ducks were having their way with Auburn in a one-sided dual meet.
The visitor watched as the fans rose to their feet, clapping, stomping and hooting as Rudy Chapa and Alberto Salazar - the senior stars for the Oregon men's track team - drove to the tape.
`This is crazy,' thought George Walcott, the highly prized recruit from Central Arizona Junior College, who was enthralled by the crowd's energy that rattled through the wooden rafters.
