As the US Pentagon builds up jet fuel stocks in preparation for a possible war against Iraq, it is still having problems securing supplies for its planes flying in and out of Afghanistan under Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). And, as this week's clashes on the Afghan-Pakistan border testify, the work of the US military in Afghanistan is far from over.
In the initial frantic months of OEF, which kicked off in December 2001 and soon achieved its aim of removing the Afghan Taliban movement from power, the Pentagon was buying up to 60,000 barrels per day (7,600 metric tons per day) of jet fuel for its fighter jets.
