Apr. 23--Alex Madonna, whose highway construction, cattle ranches, philanthropy and world-famous Madonna Inn made him a legendary figure on the Central Coast and beyond, died Thursday morning of an apparent heart attack. He was 85.

"He was truly a gentleman,'' said Pam Vegher, development director of Mission College Prep, which Madonna's children attended. "He touched lives in this community for decades, and people never knew about it. That was his style. I consider him a hero."
