The Navy has established a small, specialized command that promises to bring 85 jobs to the region, plus salaries and spending in the range of $20 million.

The Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Command will help the Navy deal with the threat of submarines in a world that has changed much since the end of the Cold War.

Rear Adm. John J. Waickwicz took command of the organization in ceremonies April 8 at the Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center on Harbor Drive.

Since the end of the Cold War, the Navy has let its anti-submarine skills atrophy, said Bob Brandhuber, a retired Navy captain charged with setting up the organization.
