In most cases, it is obvious when someone needs to use hand controls in order to drive. The rule of thumb is that if your legs do not work, you need hand controls!

Less obvious, but just as important, is the need a double, below-the-knee amputee has for hand controls. The prosthetic limbs do not have the sensation to give adequate "feel" to the pedals. Those people who are partially paralyzed and can walk but lack sensation in lower extremities require hand controls because they also cannot feel the pedals.
