Elk Corp of Dallas, Texas, USA, has developed a roofing underlay system. International Patent WO 01/40568 describes the system as a two-layer coated fabric that comprises an anionic charge coating on a basic felt. The felt may be made from a variety of different fibres and is impregnated with asphalt. The coating comprises filler and a binder that bonds the filler together with itself and to the substrate. Importantly, the binder does not bleed through the substrate.
