When this author visited Thailand for the first time about fifteen years ago, its infrastructure was terrible. It could take hours to make a simple telephone call. In fact, many firms employed so-called "dialers" whose sole function was to keep dialing the telephone until a connection was made. Today, the country's telephone system--including cellular service--is excellent. Similarly, Bangkok's once notorious traffic jams are a thing of the past. Today, a "sky rail" carries many passengers through Bangkok, and highways run like cobwebs in and around the city.
