SAN JOSE, CA--Chips and Technologies says its "either net" chip set will run either Ethernet or token-ring local area network (LAN) protocols. TI is also developing a "switchable" dual-function chip set that supports both popular LAN formats for personal computers.
Token-ring LAN ICs have previously been offered commercially only by Texas Instruments (Dallas, TX).
Swtichable LAN chip sets could benefit LAN equipment makers by simplifying design tasks, reducing chip inventory, and potentially enabling "universal" products that could plug into either LAN. These issues would be especially important to motherboard designers, according to David Pearce, ...
