May 1--Frosty political relations between Japan and North Korea are taking a toll on economic links between the two countries, pushing down bilateral trade to about one-fourth of what it was two decades ago.
The main reason for the drop is simply because trade between the two countries makes no economic sense. But political factors, such as Japan's anger over North Korea's abductions of its nationals, are also playing a part in the decline.
