A lot of folks would argue that the great old Single Action Army reigns supreme as the archetypical, stereotypical American handgun, but not me. My vote goes to the Colt 1911. It was America's standard service pistol for nearly 75 years and got us through two World Wars, Korea, Vietnam and innumerable "small wars" (note: no war is small if you're in the middle of it).
