When temperatures soared above 100 degrees in Temecula one day last summer, more than 7,000 people skipped a day at the beach to attend the grand opening of Harveston, a new housing subdivision in this southwest Riverside County community known for its hot-air balloon rides and 19 wineries.
Many of the people sweltering in the Riverside County heat that day hailed from San Diego County.
To date, 31 percent of the homeowners at Harveston, a 1,900-unit development by Miami-based Lennar Communities, come from San Diego County. Temecula officials estimate that up to 50 percent of the city's newcomers are San Diego County emigrants.
