In order to study living things, scientists have organized them into five groups; this is called classification. Plants and animals are two examples of such groups. But how can scientists organize the groups. Just think of all the animals you know about: tigers, frogs, parrots, horses, crocodiles, cows, goldfish, lizards, snakes, hummingbirds, and many more. They are all animals, but they are all so different!

All animals have three things in common: they all need to eat to live, they can all move around, and they can sense their surroundings. For example, they know when food is nearby.
